“My husband coughed every night for months — until I discovered what was really living in our air”

Maureen R., 67, a retired teacher from Galway, was always convinced that her home was clean and healthy — the place her grandchildren Aoife and Jack loved, and where Seán liked everything to be just so.

She hoovered the rugs. Changed the sheets every week. Opened the windows to air the place.

But for a while now, something had changed.

It started when Seán developed a deep, stubborn cough.

At first he paid no heed to it.

“Ah, it’s nothing. It’s the weather.”

“I’m grand. I’m just not twenty any more, that’s all.”

Seán all over — too proud to go to the GP about something he saw as a trifle.

But it got worse.

He would wake in the middle of the night and cough so hard she could feel the bed shake. She would find him sitting on the edge of the bed, bent forward, his hand pressed to his chest, struggling for breath. And still he insisted he didn’t need anything.

But deep down, Maureen felt the fear growing.

One night the coughing fit was so violent that Seán doubled over, both hands gripping the edge of the mattress to hold himself up. His face went red. His breathing, short. He trembled with every attempt to catch his breath.

And at that moment, Maureen understood:

It wasn’t his age.

It wasn’t just the weather.

It wasn’t a “harmless little cough”.

Something in their home was making him ill.

And she felt it in her own chest too — a blocked nose in the mornings, a tickle in her throat that wouldn’t go away.

“This can’t go on.”

The next morning, Maureen sat down at her laptop and typed: “chronic cough causes at home”.

According to a study by the German Federal Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt), house dust mites are among the most common causes of irritated airways indoors.¹ They live in mattresses, pillows, rugs and upholstered furniture — anywhere it’s warm and soft.

Maureen had heard of dust mites — who hasn’t? But what she didn’t know:

It isn’t the mites themselves that make you ill. They feed on dead skin — and their droppings contain an allergenic protein called Der p 1.²

These particles can linger in the air at home for years.

They are so light that they float in the air — like invisible smoke. You breathe them in. Every night.

And it’s not just about sneezing and a runny nose. Medical researchers warn: Der p 1 isn’t merely a nuisance — breathing it in over a long time can reduce lung function and leave you more vulnerable to chest infections.

According to the German research organisation Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, long-term exposure to dust mite allergens can increase the risk of asthma five-fold — especially in adults over 50 and young children.³

And right now, with the heating on, it isn’t getting any better.

The windows stay shut, the heating dries out the air — and the dust stays inside, with you.⁴

The mite allergens stay inside no matter what.

She thought of Aoife and Jack — of how they had played on the sitting-room rug last Sunday. Then she thought of Seán. His red face in the middle of the night. His hands clutching the headboard. That cough that made the bed shake while she lay beside him — helpless, counting the minutes.

She was horrified.

This house — the one she had kept spotless for forty years, where her grandchildren ran from room to room on Sundays — had made him ill. Here. In their own bedroom. All that time.

“If only I had known sooner.”

Title

That evening Maureen cleaned the whole house from top to bottom — but the next morning it was even worse.

Seán was coughing the moment he woke, his voice was hoarse and the air felt heavier than before. Hoovering and dusting stir the allergens up instead of removing them.⁵

Over the following days, she tried everything she could think of.

First the chemist. Cetirizine and a nasal spray. Seán took them reluctantly — “If you really insist.”

A week went by. The cough was exactly the same. She was fighting the reaction, not the cause. The mites in the mattress kept producing their Der p 1, night after night.

She started airing the rooms three times a day — ten minutes with the windows wide open, even when it was cold. Fresh air came in. But a few hours later, the bedroom air was as heavy as ever. She was putting the problem off, not solving it.

She went to Harvey Norman to look at air purifiers. Philips, Dyson — €350 to €600, not counting the replacement filters. Every two or three months, new filters: €60 to €80 each. And the machines were enormous. Standing in the aisle, she could already picture one in the corner of her bedroom — the noise, the size, the look on Seán’s face. She went home empty-handed.

She rang a cleaning company. Mattresses, upholstery, rugs — the full treatment. The quote: over €500. For a single visit. And the woman on the phone mentioned, almost in passing, that the mites would probably be back within a few weeks.

The weeks went by. Nothing worked. And Seán kept coughing.

Maureen could see no way out. Spend money they didn’t have on treatments that would barely last a few weeks — or accept that the rest of their life together would simply sound like this.

“Maybe I just have to accept it.”

Over coffee with her friend Bernadette, as every second Tuesday, Bernadette told her about her daughter-in-law in Cork, who had given her and Liam a little device.

“A little gadget you plug into the socket. For the dust in the air, she said. I don’t know exactly how it works — but Liam hardly coughs at all any more. For a few weeks now.”

“I’ve another one at home,” she said. “My daughter-in-law sent us three. Will I bring it over to you?”

Maureen hesitated.

“If it’s no bother.”

Two days later, a small white device was sitting on Maureen’s kitchen table.

On the packaging it said: Nordee Air Ioniser.

That evening, Maureen plugged the device into the socket beside the bed — on her side, behind the bedside locker, where Seán wouldn’t see it.

She said nothing to him.

Title

The first night, she noticed nothing. The cough came as always.

On the third day, the bedroom air smelled different. Fresher. Lighter.

On the fifth day, Seán slept through the night. For the first time in months. Maureen lay awake — out of habit — waiting for the cough that never came.

In the second week, Maureen woke one morning and lay perfectly still. Something had changed. Her nose was clear. No tickle in her throat. She reached for the tissue on the bedside locker — and didn’t need it.

In the third week, at breakfast, Seán said:

“I don’t know what’s changed. I haven’t coughed in days.”

Maureen took a sip of her coffee.

“Maybe it’s the weather.”

What really changed the air in Maureen’s bedroom

The Nordee device works with what’s called ionisation technology — a method used for years in hospitals and clinics, where clean air isn’t an option but a necessity.⁶

The device releases negative ions into the room. These attach to invisible particles — dust mite allergens, fine particles, pollen, pet hair — and weigh them down until they drop out of the air.⁷

The result: almost 100% of airborne particles are removed from the air you breathe.

In Germany, ionisation technology is studied and used by, among others, the university hospital Charité in Berlin and the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics.⁸

Nordee works without filters. Without noise. Without running costs. No bigger than a night light — you plug it into the socket and it does its job. Day and night.

After a month, Seán was sleeping through the night. Not every night, but most. Maureen slept better too — because she was no longer lying awake listening.

She ordered two more.

One for the sitting room.

One for the spare room, where the grandchildren slept.

One Saturday afternoon, Aoife and Jack came to visit.

Seán sat on the floor beside Aoife, building a tower of blocks with her.

He didn’t cough once.

Maureen watched them from the kitchen door.

As she was leaving, her daughter said:

“It smells different in here. Fresher.”

Maureen shrugged.

“I had the windows open.”

But the windows had stayed shut.

What other women are saying

In recent months, more than 47,000 households in Germany and Austria have chosen Nordee — so many that the manufacturer temporarily ran out of stock last winter.

A few of the messages our editorial team has received:

Renate K., 64, from Düsseldorf:

“My husband has had this cough for 15 years. No doctor could help him. No medicine worked. I plugged this little device into the socket, and after a week he slept through the night for the first time. He doesn’t even know it’s there.”

Hannelore M., 71, from Graz:

“I first ordered it for the bedroom, thinking: I’ll try it and see. After two weeks my cough was gone — not reduced, gone. My daughter noticed before I did. Now I have one in the living room and one in the children’s room.”

Ingrid W., 66, from Hamburg:

“I was sceptical. Very sceptical. A device this small would succeed where a €400 air purifier had failed? Then, at a check-up, my GP mentioned indoor air quality in passing — not advice, just a remark. That same evening I did some research. That’s how I came across Nordee. After ten days, I slept without a tissue beside my bed for the first time in years.”

Our editorial test: four weeks with the Nordee ioniser

When Maureen’s story reached us, we wanted to try it ourselves.

Our health correspondent Siobhán Gallagher tested the device at home for four weeks.

Week 1

I’ll admit it: I was sceptical. A device barely bigger than a night light would clean the air in a room? I plugged it in in the bedroom anyway.

The first morning: no difference.

The second, neither.

Only on the fourth day did I notice I was no longer waking up during the night. No sneezing, no dry throat. Was it the device? I wasn’t sure.

Week 2

By now it was getting hard to ignore. The bedroom air really did feel different — lighter, less stuffy, even in the morning.

My husband, who knew nothing about the test, said at breakfast:

“Did you buy new sheets? Something’s different.”

I didn’t tell him what it was.

Week 3

I plugged a second device in in the living room. There, the difference was even clearer.

A week later my sister called in and said:

“It smells like you’ve just aired the place.”

We hadn’t.

Week 4

After four weeks, I can say this:

The air in both rooms is different.

I can’t say with one hundred per cent certainty that it’s down to the Nordee — that would take a controlled study. But the change is there.

My husband sleeps more peacefully. And the nights I lie awake are fewer and further between.

And after four weeks, I wouldn’t part with it.

P.S.

Last night I woke at three o’clock. Out of habit.

I listened. Silence.

Seán was asleep. Calm. Steady.

I turned over and went back to sleep.
